How to get a driving license?

The customer must first apply online (bsp.brta.gov.bd) with the required documents for a learner or apprentice driving license. The online system will issue his learner or apprentice driving license and the customer will be able to print his apprentice driving license from the system immediately. After 2/3 months of training, he will have to take part in written, oral and field tests at the designated center on the scheduled date and time. At this time the candidate has to bring the required proof, his learner or apprentice driving license (original copy) and pen to participate in the written test.

Types of driving licenses

There are 3 types of driving licenses based on the weight of the vehicle. That is: –

1. Applicants must be at least 20 years of age for a professional light (motor vehicle weight below 2500 kg) driving license.
2. Candidates must be at least 23 years of age for a professional medium (motor vehicle weight 2500 to 6500 kg) driving license and use of a professional light driving license must be at least 3 years.
3. Candidates for a professional heavy (motor vehicle weight more than 6500 kg) driving license must be at least 28 years of age and the use a professional medium driving license must be at least 3 years.

Prerequisite for getting a driving license

• The prerequisite for a driving license is a learner’s or apprentice’s driving license.
• The minimum educational qualification of a driving license applicant is an 8th-class pass.
• Must be at least 18 years old for an amateur and 21 years old for a professional driving license.
• Must be mentally and physically healthy.

Driving license renewal process

Amateur:

The customer has to first apply to the specified circle office of BRTA by depositing the prescribed fee (within 15 days of expiration including Tk. 4267 /- (including 15% VAT) and 15 days after expiration with penalty of Tk. 230 / – per annum) along with required documents. If the application form and attached documents are found to be correct, the customer’s biometrics (digital picture, digital signature and fingerprint) are taken on the same day. When the printing of smart card w is completed, the customer is informed via SMS.

Professional:

Professional driving license holders will have to re-participate in a practical test. After passing the examination, the prescribed fee (Tk. 2542 / – (including 15% VAT) if within 15 days of expiration and Tk. 230 / – per annum after 15 days of an expiration with penalty) has to be submitted to the specified circle office of BRTA along with required documents.To receive the customer’s biometrics (digital photo, digital signature and fingerprint) the customer has to be present at the designated circle office. The customer is notified via SMS when all the process of smart card w printing is completed.

• In case of both professional and amateur driving licenses, after 15 days of expiration, a penalty of Tk.230 / – per year has to be paid.
